The culture of ‘paal abhishekam’, the huge cut-outs, banners and posters, the thousand-wala and ten-thousand-wala firecrackers – all the festive celebration on the day of release originally belong to AIADMK founder and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M G Ramachandran.
MGR started his career as a theatre artist in the Original Boys Drama School. Then, he entered movies with a supporting role in ‘Sathi Leelavathi’. All his movies were commercial entertainers, in which he led the struggle of the less fortunate. MGR became the numero uno of Tamil Cinema, before he plunged into politics in 1953. Later, in 1977, he became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and continued in the post till he died of cardiac arrest in 1987
