Sri Lankan conflict gets the attention of Kollywood directors

Frix Entertainments     February 24, 2014

Looks like Kollywood likes to have a finger on the pulse of current affairs of the state. While the debate over the release of Rajiv Gandhi's assassins is proving to be one of the hottest topics in the state, the Tamil film industry is also currently churning out films on the Sri Lankan issue. Chennai Times lists out some of these films...

Film: Sivappu
Director: Sathyashiva

The trailer of this upcoming film explicitly talks about the plight of refugees who come to the state from Sri Lanka in search of a better life. The director states, "You read in the media about how Tamils leave their soil and re-locate to other countries. You feel sorry for them, you debate about what can be done to better their situation. But, no solution has been found for their troubles till date. This film is about what they wish for in life. Sivappu (red) is a colour that denotes several emotions — love, angst, poverty, communism; it's a colour that represents the anger of every Tamilian."

Film: Inam Director: Santosh Sivan
Cinematographer-director Santosh Sivan's Inam revolves around a group of people who are not involved in the fighting, but are affected by the ongoing conflict. The story revolves around a group of teenagers in an orphanage and is set during the civil war in Sri Lanka. In Santosh's words, "After watching this film, people will look at refugees in a very different way. For Tamils, it also becomes a patriotic film. It will talk about all the problems of the Sri Lankan Tamils, without touching upon them explicitly." He has shot the film in Sri Lanka,Maharashta and Chennai among other locations

Film: Ravana Desam Director: Ajay

This recently-released film is about a group of Sri Lankan Tamils who try to cross the sea and reach the Indian coast, but end up losing their way in the middle of the sea. The film, which starred Ajay in the lead, is about the struggle of the common folks and the crisis they face during war time. "When the revolutionaries and the military engage in war, the public is most affected by the fighting. They have to seek refuge in other places, and countries. This film is about their struggle for survival," the director had said.
Film: Yaazh Director: MS Anand
Though the film does not directly deal with the Sri Lankan military or pro-Tamil groups, the film is reportedly set in Yazhpanam, with all the characters playing Eelam Tamils. In fact, the film also features songs that are penned in Eelam Tamil. The director says, "Yazhpaanam (present day Jaffna) derives its name from the music instrument yaazh, which was used by a sect of people (Paanargal) to propagate saiva siddhanta. The film is based on this concept."
Film: Neerparavai Director: SeenuRamasamy
The film is about how a young fisherman in a village in coastal Tamil Nadu ventures out into the sea to fish, and never returns. Though the film is an emotional drama about how he becomes a responsible man and marries the love of his life, the story subtly hints at the killing of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan navy.
